About Buysellread and how the preloved marketplace works

Preloved Pages is a UK marketplace for preloved books. It is a place to buy, sell, and exchange titles that still have stories left in them.

Instead of sending paperbacks to landfill or paying full price for a new edition, you can browse real listings from readers across the country. A well-loved copy gets a second home.

The marketplace includes second-hand physical books, instantly downloadable e-books, and a free book exchange. List a book by scanning its ISBN, join a reading club, or follow the blog for practical reading guides.

Physical orders ship worldwide with destination-based tracked postage. E-books arrive in your library as soon as payment clears.

About Buysellread

Buysellread is the trading name you will see on buysellread.com. It is the same community as Preloved Pages: a specialist marketplace for people who would rather pass a book on than leave it unread.

We built the site for UK readers first, then opened worldwide postage. A novel listed in Manchester can reach a buyer in Dublin, Toronto, or Auckland without guesswork at checkout.

Listings are created by real members. There is no warehouse of mystery stock. Each paperback, hardback, textbook, or e-book belongs to a seller who chose a condition grade and, where it helps, a short note about highlighting, inscriptions, or wear.

The name is literal. You can buy a title you have been meaning to read, sell a stack you have finished, and read more of what you already own by swapping through the free exchange.

That mix matters for sustainable reading. Publishing a new copy uses paper, ink, energy, and transport. A preloved copy has already paid that cost. Keeping it in circulation is one of the simplest ways to cut waste while still discovering new authors, course texts, and club picks.

We also surface recycling guidance for copies that are too damaged to sell, because not every book should travel again.

Trust is the other half of the model. Checkout runs through Stripe, so card details are tokenised rather than stored on our servers. Buyer protection sits on physical orders.

Help and FAQ pages explain delayed parcels, returns for physical books, and how digital files are delivered. If you need a person, support is available through the channels listed in Help.

We publish a privacy policy so you can see what we collect (account details, shipping address, and payment references) and what we do not sell.

How our preloved marketplace works

Buying a book

Open the marketplace and filter by category, search by title or author, or follow a link from the blog or a club discussion.

Every card shows the listed price in your chosen currency, the seller's condition grade, and whether the item is a physical copy, a digital e-book, or a free exchange.

Physical prices are the seller's base plus a small platform protection fee. Tracked postage is calculated at checkout from the weight band and the country on your profile.

E-books skip postage entirely: pay once and the file is waiting in your library. When you are ready, add the title to your basket or send an offer if the seller is open to a conversation.

Offers and swap requests live in Messages so both sides have a record.

After you pay, we treat the order as a three-sided agreement. The seller is notified to pack the book. Where the sale is eligible, we generate a postage label so tracking is attached to the same order you already paid for.

You can follow progress from your profile. If a parcel is delayed or arrives not as described, the returns and claims process is written for UK consumer rules on physical goods.

Digital purchases are delivered immediately, which is why they follow a different refund path explained on the returns page. Messaging stays inside Preloved Pages, so you do not have to share a private email with another reader.

Selling from your shelf

Listing is designed around the ISBN barcode on the back cover. Open Sell, scan or type the number, and we look up title, author, and cover art from public book databases.

If a cover image is missing, you can snap the front of the book in place. Choose Nearly New or Good, add an honest note, and set a price with the suggested bands as a guide rather than a rule.

You can list up to fifty titles in a batch, which is useful when you are clearing a bookcase after a move or a course.

E-books have their own flow: upload the file and write a description. We still strip copied retailer text so listings stay original.

When a buyer pays, the funds path is visible. Seller payouts are in pounds sterling. You confirm dispatch with the label we provide, and the order moves through fulfilment until it is complete.

Physical copies can also sync to eBay when you choose that channel, using the same condition and description so you are not maintaining two contradictory listings.

If a title does not sell, you can delete it or turn it into an exchange listing instead of lowering the price forever.

Trading and exchanging

Not every book needs a price tag. The free exchange is for titles you want to keep moving: a paperback you loved, a duplicate, or a club leftover.

You still describe condition, still use tracked postage, and still pay a small combined protection and label fee so both people are covered.

Request a swap from the listing, offer one of your own books, and agree in messages. It is slower than clicking Buy, and that is the point. Exchange is for readers who like the conversation as much as the object.

Clubs sit beside the marketplace rather than replacing it. A host picks a book, members discuss it, and when someone wants their own copy they can follow a marketplace listing instead of ordering a brand-new edition by default.

The blog publishes practical guides — how to grade a spine, how to pack a hardback, how to read more from what you already own — so the site is useful even on days you are not buying.

Share a favourite listing or this about page on X, Facebook, or LinkedIn from the footer if you want friends to find the same title without forwarding a screenshot.

Sustainable reading, without the lecture

We will not pretend that every second-hand purchase saves the planet. We will say that a well-made book is meant to outlast a single owner.

Buysellread exists so that extra life is easy to arrange: searchable, paid for securely, posted with a label, and documented if something goes wrong.

If you are new, start with three actions. Create a profile and add a delivery address. Browse the marketplace for a paperback you actually want to read this month. When you finish it, list it again.

That loop — buy, read, sell or swap — is the whole product. Everything else, from ISBN lookup to clubs, is there to keep the loop honest and quick.

Questions about postage countries, condition grades, or how offers work are answered in Help. Legal terms, returns, and privacy are linked in the footer on every page.

The marketplace, this about page, and each book page are server-rendered so search engines can read the same words you do. We would rather you find a specific ISBN from a search result than land on an empty page.

That is also why we ask sellers for real covers and plain-language descriptions: the next reader should know what they are getting before they pay.
